Crowdfunding the GNOME Desktop: What we learned

At last year’s GUADEC in A Coruña, Adam Dingle and I gave a keynote on the challenges of financing open-source software for the free desktop and our thoughts on how crowdfunding may solve that problem.

On March 25th, Yorba launched a crowdfunding campaign for the Geary email client.  The campaign will end on April 25th.

My talk will detail what we (will) have learned in the process: preparing for a crowdfunding campaign, the ups and downs during the campaign, and the perpetual challenge of an independent software house being able to offer free desktop software and pay its employees a decent wage.  I’ll also discuss other funding models we’ve considered and the general reaction we received while crowdfunding.
