GNOME in the Open Source Community

Over the past nine months the tiny Chicago GNOME community has been organizing monthly hackfests and talks on GNU/Linux related topics at our local hackerspace. In this talk, I will talk about some of the positive and negative things we’ve learned: Successes and failures we’ve encountered in introducing newcomers to GNOME development; How developers’ perception of our community affects the reputation of the desktop; and supporting free expression of opinion and respectful interaction between community members.
